Solutions for Government Network Security

Improved visibility across the network helps government technology teams protect citizen data.

Add a layer of defense with packet-level network visibility

In 2021, application vulnerabilities are a top attack vector among external security threats for both public and private institutions — just as they were in 2020. Government agencies are prime targets worldwide because of the rich inventory of stored sensitive information and mission-critical systems.

Forrester’s annual report (The State of Government Application Security, 2021) states governments are still lagging in key areas to defend against external attacks that come from application weaknesses. The pandemic work environment of 2020-2021 propagated the shift to remote work, driving companies to rely on applications to an even greater extent. This workplace evolution explains why research indicates that web applications are the most common form of external attack, followed by software vulnerabilities.1

Network and security architects across all industries understand that visibility throughout their infrastructure is fundamental to security. Improved network visibility uncovers attacks, reduces risks, and builds resiliency.

To take visibility even deeper, true visibility includes having insights at the packet level. Packets are valuable sources of truth and provide the granular detail that network engineers need to spot and resolve security threats. Without deep visibility at the packet level, threats can remain hidden. APCON helps governments improve cybersecurity defenses with complete network visibility in multiple ways:

  • Optimize traffic through Packet Deduplication, Protocol (Header) Stripping, and Packet Slicing
  • Aggregate and filter traffic to make the best use of the data
  • Deliver the right traffic efficiently to security monitoring tools
  • Gain complete control of your network visibility for real time insights

Improve network visibility to reduce security blind spots and protect data

Network traffic is increasing at warp speed. According to a study from Computer.org (Dealing With COVID-19 Network Traffic Spikes, 2021), the significant increase of users worldwide relying on the Internet for work and education (including government-related sites and applications) is causing a substantial rise in bandwidth usage. This added traffic has resulted in a spike in the number of cyberattacks like malware, ransomware, and distributed denial of service (DDoS).2

As data rates and network traffic increase in speed and complexity, it becomes harder to identify weaknesses and resolve problems that impact applications and mission-critical systems.

In statistics compiled by Retarus, a corporate communications provider, 2020 saw malware cyber threats increase by 358% while ransomware jumped by 435% compared to 2019.3 Many high-profile hacks in the first half of 2021 indicate that these cyber threats continue to disrupt the operations of both government and private entities.

With the right network visibility solution, government network operations and security teams can capture, aggregate, and filter traffic in a manner not possible with other technologies, including:

Optimize security tools to increase efficiency and protect against failure

Network and security teams monitor applications with diagnostic and forensic tools critical for analysis, and ultimately security. Too often, though, the traditional monitoring tools technology teams rely upon are inadequate for modern high-speed networks.

Government network and security operations teams can use APCON’s network visibility solutions to optimize and reduce network traffic fed to monitoring tools to increase efficiency.

The result is enabling technology teams to identify external attacks at the source quickly.

Network visibility builds confidence

Governments must utilize modern technologies and best practices to identify malicious threats, build network resiliency, and win the cybersecurity battle. As governments expand their use of technologies to protect applications and secure citizen data, they help build confidence with constituents.
