Monitoring 10G Links with 1G Tools

In complex enterprise networks, data center managers face a growing set of challenges – including the need to effectively monitor both 1G and 10G network segments. This trend is driving the need for organizations to invest in 10G monitoring devices. However, the reality is that they often have to rely on 1G monitoring tools due to budget constraints.

For a 10G tool, such as an analyzer, prices often start at $50,000 – not including the annual support contract, which can add another 15 percent. Thus, the investment – for an organization that has, say, five geographically dispersed data centers, each equipped with five analysis tools – can run to over one million in capital costs and to nearly $200,000 in annual support fees.
